STAVROS GEORGIOU
Stavros Georgiou (born in Cyprus in 1972) is a contemporary self-taught artist whose life and work have been deeply shaped by experiences of war, displacement and loss. Originally from the Kyrenia district of Cyprus, he became a refugee after the 1974 invasion. During the conflict, he and his family were trapped in the Dome Hotel for six months before being evacuated with the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross. This experience exposed him at a young age to the devastating human consequences of war, forced migration and uncertainty. These defining events would later become central influences on both his personal path and his artistic practice. His family was further marked by the tragedy of a missing relative. After the events of 1974, his uncle was listed among the missing in Cyprus and his remains were identified many years later. This profound personal loss strengthened his commitment to creating art that explores themes of peace and the protection of human rights.
Today, Stavros Georgiou lives and works in Greece. His work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Greece, Cyprus and internationally and he is a registered member of the Hellenic and Cypriot Chamber of Fine Arts.
For him, promoting peace and defending human and animal rights require more than ideals – they require substantive action and sustained commitment. His artworks are created with the aim of conveying clear and powerful messages that resonate on a deeply emotional level. By directly addressing the viewer’s emotions and experiences, he aims to evoke empathy, reflection, and a stronger personal connection to the issues his work addresses. Drawing from his own experiences of war, displacement, and loss, he has learned to transform pain into artistic expression. At the heart of his philosophy is the belief that, no matter how harsh reality may become, humanity must never lose its capacity for hope. While others may inflict pain, no one can determine how we choose to bear, deal with, or transform it. This belief is reflected throughout his work, which seeks to transform pain into awareness, memory into dialogue, and adversity into a call for peace, justice, compassion, and respect for all living beings.
