Cultural Diplomacy

Why cultural diplomacy matters

Wars are fought over borders, power and money, but they are lived by people. Art speaks to people before politics does. A sculpture, a painting or an exhibition can reach places where speeches and treaties cannot: it asks us to stop, feel and understand another person’s experience.

That is the purpose of cultural diplomacy. When artists, embassies, institutions and audiences meet in the same space, trust grows, dialogue begins and different cultures stop being strangers. It does not replace politics, but it prepares the ground for it. Understanding comes before cooperation, and respect comes before peace.

Stavros Georgiou’s projects are built on this belief. Having lived through war and displacement, he uses public art and exhibitions to promote peace and human rights, and to remind us that what we share as human beings matters more than what divides us.

UNITED EMBASSIES

An international cultural diplomacy initiative

United Embassies invites embassies from around the world to take part in an international art exhibition, each presenting selected artists from its own country. Through art and cultural exchange, the initiative promotes peace, respect for human rights and mutual understanding among nations, and creates a shared space for dialogue, cooperation and friendship.

THE REAL DEBT

The human cost of power

The Real Debt challenges the idea of financial debt. It argues that humanity’s true debt is measured in human lives lost to wars, genocides and atrocities committed in the pursuit of power. Eleven artworks in the form of banknotes trace historical atrocities from the age of Christopher Columbus to the present day, and question the human cost of political power and the responsibility of world leaders.

A debt measured in human lives can never be repaid.
